On street car-parking charges is clearly one issue which exercises most of the community. I've looked at the proposals in detail, seen the results of an Economic Impact Assessment carried out by the Oxted Chamber of Commerce and I'm convinced that the proposal as they stand are unworkable in a largely rural place like East Surrey. They would damage local businesses, at a time when they need all the help they can get, and would alter our day-to-day way of life throughout the community. Local residents seem to agree - 9,000 have now signed a petition against the charges. I made my views clear to Andrew Povey, leader of Surrey County Council, and Ian Lake (SCC Cabinet Member for Transport) at a face to face meeting in the Commons and am working with Tandridge District Councillors, residents and local businesses to see how we can come up with a solution to help shoppers, local workers, and the small businesses which are the backbone of our economy.
