I welcome the Department for Education’s plans to introduce a national funding formula for schools. The current system for distributing school funding is unfair and out of date. It is based on post-code and inconsistent decisions made several years ago, so that similar schools with similar students receive wildly varying levels of funding.
The new reforms will mean that schools will be funded on the actual needs of the pupils in the school and schools in East Surrey will receive on average 2.6% more funding as a result of these changes.
As Education Minister earlier this year, I was responsible for publishing the principles of these reforms and I’m delighted that with this final consultation we are much closer to fairer funding in our education system so that each child will have the real opportunity to reach their potential.
