I welcome the Government’s decision that a third runway should be built at Heathrow, in line with the recommendations from the independent Davies Commission. This has been made in the national interest and will allow a global Britain to show a strong statement of intent that it is open for business to the world.
Gatwick never convincingly demonstrated that it would be able to provide the necessary infrastructure, especially in building the new rail lines and roads needed, to match its ambition. The environmental impact of a new runway would have been severe, with Gatwick already struggling to deal with the impact of noise caused from existing aircraft. Moving forward, I share with many others, the view that now a decision has been made, it is vital building moves ahead as quickly as possible.
