Supporting pupils with mental health issues

On Friday (5th Feb) I was pleased to convene a roundtable discussion with headteachers from schools across our area, including Oxted, De Stafford, Limpsfield Grange and Warlingham, to discuss how we can support pupils with mental health issues.

At any time one in 10 children are suffering from a mental illness – that is 3 in any average sized class. We need to do more to tackle the stigma that exists around mental health, so that pupils can speak confidently about the issues and know that they can get the help they need to fulfil their potential.

This was an extremely productive meeting, and I am delighted to see the commitment of schools in our area to sharing best practice and ensuring they provide the support our young people need. I am grateful to Oxted School for hosting the discussion, and to Natasha Devon MBE for attending to share strategies for assisting children with mental health issues and details of the wider support available to schools.
