This afternoon the Environment Agency have issued a groundwater Flood Alert for the Caterham Bourne: Groundwater levels in the upper Wandle area are high, causing the Caterham Bourne to flow. The intense rainfall received over Christmas and the New Year is currently soaking through the ground, increasing groundwater levels further. A further increase to groundwater from the recent rain will cause the river to come out of bank. Initially, this will result in shallow flooding over low lying roads and properties. We expect this to start happening, potentially in the Kenley and Whyteleafe area , in the next few days. To report rising groundwater levels or flooding, please call the Environment Agency Incident Hotline on 0800 80 70 60. You can also sign up to the free groundwater Flood Alert/Warning service by calling Floodline on 0845 988 1188 or registering online at www.environment-agency.gov.uk. The Environment Agency have informed the Surrey and London Resilience Forums and are monitoring the water levels in this area. Field teams are out clearing screens and removing blockages from the Bourne.
