WATCH: http://www.bbc.co.uk/i/b01jxx2s/?t=24m49s (available until 22 June) On Friday I took part in a Newsnight debate to discuss elitism in politics alongside Owen Jones (author of Chavs: the demonisation of the working class ). My key points during the interview were: – No-one, including politicians, should be prisoners of their background. It is values that matter, not where you grew up or which school you attended. – A more important issue is competence, and on big decisions like the Prime Minister’s veto of Europe’s fiscal compact or our deficit reduction strategy, the Government has demonstrated it is up to the task. – The Left’s strategy of calling the Government ‘out of touch’ is a lazy substitute for having a credible economic plan.
